Electrified 1959 Starcraft Runabout - A Retro Mod Series
I've been tinkering with boats for decades and love the lines of runabouts from the 50s and 60s. When I came across a clean oldie in pretty good shape and with paperwork I had to pick it up. It's been a slow process during the summer but we're back to making progress. (In between CNC stuff and other interesting builds)
The seats are in, the DIY 10,000 watt motor is operational, gages are going in along with other dash controls, and hopefully in the next few weeks we will get some on the water fun with this oldie! This fall should be a blast. Stay tuned!
Thanks for taking a look!

    Hi @drez20001 I am just about to start building a Genesis clock. Found the plans in the 'Making Wooden Gear Clocks' published by the editors of Scrollsaw Woodworking. Bought from Amazon it is a lot cheaper than buying from Boyers website. I am thinking of cutting the gears on a laser cutter using thinner ply and and 'layering up' where I need extra thickness. Any thoughts? do you think this would work?

    • @drez20001
      @drez20001 4 дня назад

      Awesome. Yep, the plans were included in that edition of Scrollsaw Woodworking. It should work. Laser cutters are accurate enough to be very consistent. It's a fun build that is pretty forgiving. I'd give some thought to making sure your registration is tight with stacking the gears; maybe using pins or some other way to keep them lined up. Best of luck.

      Thanks for your questions. It was a fun build. I've actually handed off the motor to a friend of mine but the rough numbers when I was using it was around a 40 amp draw at top speed; on the heavy fiberglass, deep V boat I was testing it on top speed was around 5 to 6 mph. Battery range and run time would be dependent on speed. A small reduction in speed would greatly expand range of course. On a light aluminum boat it would probably do very well.

    Awesome project!!! You probably figured this out by now but the shunt should loose its accurate percentage reading when you turn the disconnect off to the batteries. It will show 100 percent until it actually reaches 100 percent. I don't think you will have a problem leaving it on especially with the solar always plugged in. The shunts are actually really accurate once they learn the battery and stay on. You could also connect the power wires for the shunt before the disconnect to make sure the shunt stays on all the time and not loose its calibration. I may also change the ah setting to 90 percent of the nominal ah number just to leave a little head room.

    Works a treat! 👍 Last year I upgraded my car. The tradein offer was a joke, so I decided to sell my old one myself, by displaying it at a popular local site. All I needed was some window signs, and Job Done! Initially I printed the price on paper, taped it to vinyl, and hand-cut through both layers... BORING! 😴 The car didn't sell! 😱 Lower price number set needed. 😡 I bought a drag-knife very similar to yours; pleased with it. 😃 NO CNC! 🥴 Don't panic... my aging Ender 3 3D printer might work as a poor mans CNC? 🤔 I designed and 3D printed a compliant knife holder, based on the flexure design I had seen in Dan Gelbart's fantastic series on rapid prototyping. ruclips.net/video/PaypcVFPs48/видео.htmlsi=lG9-uE4dMD_vb4pN IT WORKED! 😁 The flexure mount was rigid, and precise... very satisfying! 👍 What was not satisfying was the car... I needed to cut a whole lot of numbers... each smaller than before. 👎 🤬 Predictably, the printer was not rigid enough, eventually the knife dug into the cutting mat, resulting in an exploding compliant knife holder... rigid? - Yes... strong? - NO! I assembled the parts to cobble up a makeshift X / Y plotter, Fusion 360 helped with the design. Really looking forward to this little adventure!! 😛 THE BLOODY CAR SOLD!!! One day... 😜 👍 Thanks for the video... always look forward to them. Don't lose that guitar! Of course my plotter would have been better! YEAH RIGHT!

Make note of that. Then hook up the camper and go there and wait all together. Subtract the vehicle weight from that number and then you know what the camper weighs. Just a thought. Any 48v battery will do the job from lead acid to LifePo4 units. The LifePo4 batteries will certainly last far longer and can be run down virtually flat compared to lead acid that shouldn't be taken below about 50%. I've had fine results from the LifePo4 batteries on Amazon. I've tried several manufacturers and they've all been fine. The cable is pricey but is plug and play. Those motors produce a lot of torque at the low to mid range of the rpm, a bigger prop helps to use that 2000 watts for efficiently. Gas outboards have high rpm output with the torque coming in at the higher rpm. BLDC or just DC motors can turn a big prop easily. Big prop, deeper angle. Paddle that water out of the way.

    Hi and thanks for taking the trouble to get this information out to the public. Have you committed any of the battery stats to writing - i.e into a headwind, 5 mph, 3-48 volt, 50AH batteries in parallel = total 150 AH provides a Range X hours @ 5mph ?

      Thanks for your comments. It's very happy to push the boat at between 6 and 6.5mph at around 4,000 to 4,500 watts. At 4,000 watts it will pull around 80amps. So ~almost~ two hours of run time with the 150ah pack I have. The motor doesn't seem to fade with a breeze or headwind as there isn't much drag. At 5mph it would be in the 2 to 3,000 watt range, about a 60amp draw, and a run time of close to three hours. Best of luck.

      Thanks. It's vinyl soffit from any large hardware store. Easy, light, snaps together, and a simple way to cover stained or repaired areas. Best of luck.

    The boat kits from Chesapeake Light Craft use these puzzle joints. These are very useful when making something that is bigger than the sheet of wood we have.

      Puzzle joints are great for extending sheets as well as decorative uses. It's a cool little skill to have and with this kind of a method you can design all kinds of unique shapes. Fun stuff.

    Another enjoyable and informative video, thanks. I enjoyed it soo much I went straight to your sponsors; nice people, great to deal with... I was so impressed I bought all the widgets they had in stock! 😜 One little grizzle though; as I always do, I stuck around at the end for my laid-back fingerpickin' fix... I'm suffering from withdrawal! 😵‍💫 🥴

      Appreciate the support of our sponsors! Very kind. I'll get back to some music shortly. Just mixing it up a bit.
